Quilt Size: 36“ x 52“ Baby Quilt
Block Size: 8” x 8”

Fabric Requirements:
(Yardage is based on 44" wide fabric)
5/8 yard light blue background
5/8 yard medium blue for setting squares
1/2 yard yellow for circles
1/4 yard pink for tulips
1/8 yard for green leaves
1-1/4 yards fabric for border/binding
1-2/3 yards backing fabric
42" x 58" Warm & Natural cotton batting
8" x 12" template plastic
2-1/4 yards of 12" wide fusible web
1 yard of 20" wide tear-away stabilizer

Directions:
Note: A 1/4" seam allowance is included in all measurements.
1. Make templates. Trace shapes onto template plastic. Cut out each shape and label.

2. Cut the following fabrics:
Cut 2: 9" x 44" strips light blue
Cut 8: 9" x 9" squares light blue
Cut 2: 8-1/2" x 44" strips medium blue
Cut 8: 8-1/2" x 8-1/2" squares medium blue
Cut 4: 6-1/2" x 44" strips of border fabric
Cut 5: 2-1/2" x 44" strips of border fabric for binding

3. On the paper side of fusible web trace the circle template, tulip template and leaf template face down each eight times leaving 1/2" between tracings.

4. Cut apart tracings leaving 1/4" around each shape. Lay the web side down on wrong side of the appliqué fabrics. The circles go on the yellow fabric, tulips on the pink fabric and leaves on the green fabric. Lightly fuse pieces to fabrics.

5. Cut out each shape and arrange them centered on the light blue background fabric squares.

6. Permanently fuse shapes following manufacturer’s instructions.

7. Cut tear-away stabilizer into eight 8" squares. Pin a piece of stabilizer to wrong side of each appliqué block. Set your sewing machine on a narrow short zigzag stitch. Through the needle use an all-purpose matching thread for each appliqué fabric or a clear nylon thread. Put a neutral colored thread in the bobbin (white works well for the colors in the sample quilt).

8. Machine appliqué around all raw edges of appliqué pieces. Backstitch a stitch or two when starting or stopping. Remove stabilizer.

9. Press blocks from wrong side. Trim blocks to 8-1/2" x 8-1/2" with the design centered.

10. Lay out blocks in five rows of four blocks each alternating the appliqué blocks and setting squares. Stitch blocks into rows. Sew rows together.

12. Sew a 6-1/2" x 44" border strip to the long sides of quilt center. Press and trim excess.

13. Sew a 6-1/2" x 44" border strip to top and bottom of quilt. Press and trim excess.

14. Layer backing, batting and quilt top. Baste layers together. Quilt or tie as desired.

15. Prepare binding from 5 strips of border fabric, each 2-1/2" x 44". Sew strips together into one long binding strip. Press strip in half lengthwise. Carefully trim backing and batting even with quilt top.

16. Leaving an 8" tail of binding, sew binding to top of quilt through all layers matching all raw edges. Miter corners. Stop approximately 12" from where you started. Lay both loose ends of binding flat along quilt edge. Where these two loose ends meet, fold them back on themselves and press to form a crease. Using this crease as your stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding together right sides together. Trim seam to 1/4" and press open. Finish sewing tape to quilt.

17. Turn binding to back of quilt and blind stitch in place.

18. Sign and date your work.
