"Apple Butter Place Mats"

Apple Butter Place Mats
Place Mat Size: 13-1/2" x 17-1/2" ..... Block Size: 1" x 1"

Fabric Requirements: (Yardage is for 2 place mats)

Dark scraps (equal to about 3/4 yard)
Medium scraps (equal to about 1/3 yard)
Light Scraps (equal to about 2/3 yard)
1/3 yard binding fabric
1/2 yard fabric for backing
20" x 30" quilt batting

Directions: Note: A 1/4" seam allowance is included in all measurements. (Click here for Assembly Diagrams)
1. Cut the following:

Cut 120: 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" squares from light print scraps
Cut 24: 2-1/4" x 2-1/4" squares from light print scraps
Cut 96: 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" squares from medium print scraps

Cut 164: 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" squares from dark print scraps
Cut 38: 2-1/4" x 2-1/4" squares from dark print scraps
Cut 4: 2-1/2" x 44" strips of binding print

2. Cut each of the 2-1/4" light and dark squares into four triangles (Diagram # 1).

3. Piece triangles into 34 squares with two light triangles (Diagram #2) and 28 squares with only one light triangle (Diagram #3).

4. Lay out each place mat (See Layout Diagram). Stitch squares into rows. Sew rows into completed tops.

5. Layer backing, batting and place mat tops. Baste layers together.

6. Quilt or tie as desired.

7. Carefully trim backing and batting even with quilt top.

8. Prepare binding for each place mat from 2 strips of binding fabric, each 2-1/2" x 44". Sew strips together into one long binding strip. Press strip in half lengthwise.

9. Leaving an 8" tail of binding , sew binding to top of quilt through all layers matching all raw edges. Miter corners. Stop approximately 12" from where you started. lay both loose ends of binding flat along quilt edge. Where these two loose ends meet, fold them back on themselves and press to form a crease. Using this crease as your stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding together right sides together. Trim seam to 1/4" and press open. Finish sewing tape to quilt.

10. Turn binding to back of place mat and blindstitch in place.

11. Sign and date your work.
